This Mothers’ Day, find out what makes Saksham proud of his ex-Air Force officer mom, Akshatha Sajumon

One of the things that Akshatha’s son is the proudest about is the fact that she is a former Air Force officer.

Akshatha is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) who is currently working as a freelance content writer. One of the things that her 10 year old son, Saksham is the proudest about is the fact that she is a former Air Force officer. Though Akshatha had completed her tenure at the Indian Air Force much before Saksham was born, he is still very curious about it. “ Saksham keeps asking me questions about my work at the Indian Air Force, and the working conditions and tells me that he wishes he could see me in Uniform,” she explains. As a cadet, Akshatha had performed so well at the Air Force Academy that a recommendation was made that lady cadets should also be eligible for the Best Cadet award, as well as male cadets.

Saksham, in fact, wants his mother to learn many more languages.

Saksham has also been responsible for pushing Akshatha to strive harder in whatever she takes up. “Just as I am supportive of his efforts, he is supportive of my activities. For example, currently, I am doing my intermediate level course in French language. I wanted to take a break during his vacation so that I could spend more time with him. However, he insisted that I continue with my classes so that my learning does not get affected.” Saksham, in fact, wants his mother to learn many more languages. And, while he is more of a YouTube learner, the mother and son sometimes revise their French lessons together.

“Motherhood has taught me many things - to prioritize, strategize, manage and multitask too.”

Akshatha credits motherhood for many of her qualities. “After the birth of my son, I quit working full time. Hence, I was able to spend all those precious moments with him. Once he started school, I started freelancing, which gave me the freedom to decide when and how much work I could take up. Motherhood has taught me many things - to prioritize, strategize, manage and multitask too,” she explains.

My mother taught us the value of hard work, and to value resources, be it time or money

Akshatha has also learnt a lot from her own mother. “ My mother has let us do whatever we wished to and has never pressurized us for anything. She has also taught us the value of hard work, to respect and care for what we have and to value resources, be it time or money.”

As a mother, Akshatha believes in spending quality time with her child. “ Mental presence is required as much as physical. So I put my phone and other thoughts away when I am with my child,” Akshatha says.

“My mother is as sweet as chocolate, always kind to me”

Saksham may not be very expressive about his feelings for his mother in everyday life, but a poem that he wrote for his school speaks volumes about his love and admiration for her.

“My mother is as sweet as chocolate, always kind to me.
She is a truck, hard working.
My mother is a horse, helping me whenever I am stuck.
She is soft as a marshmallow, kind and empathetic.
My mother's heart is affectionate, always making me feel better when I am scared.”
